The castle is named Guzman el Bueno, nicknamed Alfonso Perez de Guzman (1256-1309), Lord of Sanlucar de Barrameda, military and noble Leon, founder of the house of Medina Sidonia, formed by his descendants through the male line.

In 1294, King Sancho IV de Castilla resorted to Guzmán for the defense of Tarifa, place threatened by the infant Don Juan, brother of the king, with the help of the Meriníes and nazaritas. There it happened the famous heroic defense of Tarifa, with the death of the innocent younger son of Guzman, who has become a legend.
